Physical Exams Q & A

What are physical exams?

Physical exams include comprehensive medical evaluations, diagnoses, and treatments as needed to keep you and your family as healthy as possible. Schedule physical exams about once a year, unless you require a physical exam more often because of a medical problem or need a work or school physical.

What are the benefits of physical exams?

A physical exam with the board-certified New York Specialty Clinics staff can help your provider detect or rule out some of the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
  • Thyroid problems
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Illnesses and injuries
  • Asthma and allergies

Preventing or treating these and other health issues is a good way to avoid potentially serious medical problems.

What should I expect during my physical exam?

When you arrive at New York Specialty Clinics for a physical examination, you might complete the following:

Vital signs check

During a vital signs check, your provider evaluates your weight, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse when you first arrive at New York Specialty Clinics.

Medical history review

Your specialist reviews your personal and family medical history. They ask about the medications you take, past diagnoses and treatments, prior surgeries, and any symptoms you have.

Physical examination

During the physical examination portion of your appointment, providers evaluate your heartbeat, breathing, reflexes, eyes, ears, throat, and more. They might also test your hearing and vision.

In women, New York Specialty Clinics providers offer a breast exam, pelvic exam to evaluate reproductive health, and a Pap test to screen for signs of cervical cancer. In men at risk for prostate cancer, your specialist might recommend a prostate exam. Children’s physical exams assess their growth, development, and overall health.

Diagnostic testing

Diagnostic tests help your specialist detect or rule out specific medical problems. They might recommend you undergo allergy testing, asthma tests, nasal or throat swabs, urine tests, or blood tests, as well as an electrocardiogram (EKG), X-rays, or other imaging procedures.

Treatment as needed

After receiving the diagnostic test results, your provider might recommend you undergo treatments, including medical weight loss, diet and exercise changes, medications, dietary supplements, further diagnostic testing, physical therapy, or a minimally invasive procedure. They can also refer you to specialists as needed.

To get and stay healthy, and lower your risk of serious medical problems, schedule a physical exam with New York Specialty Clinics by phone or book online today.
